This particular sinkhole, whose Arabic name means “the Dark Cave”
is around 150 m deep, filled with sloping loose sand and brackish
water at the bottom. The hole has an opening of 15 m in diameter.
Gypsum of the Rus Formation is in the lower parts of the sinkhole.
Pools of freshwater at the bottom of such caves were once used by
Bedouins for drinking water. It is believed that these caves in
Qatar could be linked subterraneanly.
This is a nice quick drive from Doha. Although one has to go off
the tarred road for about 500m to get to this cache, the road is
certainly negotiable by a saloon car.
Some degree of searching might be required to find the
cache.
