Why not go find Pirelli? Multi-Cache
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
This is a multistage cache. YOU MUST FIND ALL THREE STAGES TO LOG THIS AS A "FIND". The first stage is in the UAE, the second stage is a twenty minute drive into Oman, and the final stage is a short walk from there. Passports are necessary but no visa is required for UAE residents. Please note visitors on a UAE visit visa may have to formally stamp out of the UAE and enter Oman to access the second and third stages of this cache.
Exactly 1 week before the World Trade Center came tumbling down in New York City and changed our world, Patrick LaRocque and Andrew Foley placed Pirelli (GC1B56) in the Hajar mountains of Oman, just outside of Buraimi. Today it is the second oldest active cache in the GCC countries, behind CRATERCACHE (GC4B0) in Saudi Arabia. It is the oldest active cache in Oman and the UAE.
Pirelli is a special cache. It is not easy to get to, but finding it is a very rewarding experience. The scenery on the way to the cachesite is spectacular. The placement of the cache is spectacular as well, and Patrick LaRocque and Andrew Foley deserve an honorable mention for figuring out the placement of Pirelli.
I first found Pirelli on March 31st, 2007. It was my third find. The cache itself had disintegrated, so I returned a week later with a new cache container full of goodies, and replaced the cache. I then jumped through some hoops to officially adopt the cache. Since then, I have been waiting for someone to go find Pirelli, but thus far, nobody has accepted the challenge. So I am advertising: It’s cool! Go find it. You won’t regret it! There is a great place to camp near the site as well. So what are you waiting for? Why not go find Pirelli?
Now to tell you about THIS cache. Well, it’s a multi-cache. The first stage is in the UAE, and the second and final stages are just outside of Buraimi (on the way to Pirelli if you are coming from Al Ain). You will need your passport, but no visa is currently necessary for UAE residents crossing at the Hilli border crossing (NOTE: To avoid confusion, TELL THE IMMIGRATION GUY THAT YOU ARE ONLY VISITING BURAIMI). A 4X4 is not necessary and will not provide any advantage. You will have to walk a bit to get to the final stage, but no real rock climbing is necessary. This is a great one for kids, but you should keep an eye on them as you approach the final location as there are some steep cliffs nearby. The view from the final cachesite is very nice.
Some stealth will be required for the first and second stages due to passing cars.
The first stage is a laminated card with the cords for the second stage.
The second stage is micro-sized, and will indicate the cords for the final stage.
The final cache container can only hold small items. When replaced it contained the following:
-logbook
-pencil and sharpener
AND
-several cheatsheets containing waypoints and hints that will help you find Pirelli—please help yourself to one of the cheatsheets if you intend to go search for Pirelli after this cache. (This information used to be available on the Pirelli page, but it has since been removed).
I hope you enjoy this cache. I have purposely made it difficult by using a few hiding techniques that I learned while caching in the USA in the summer of 2007. The first and second stages of the cache are hidden in a location/manner that I have not seen yet in the UAE. The difficulty level is adjusted for this. I have made the hints short, but please do not use them unless you have to (they bring the difficulty down at least a couple of stars)! I will email spoilers for the first two stages to anyone who logs a DNF. If you can find all the stages of this one, then you will have no problem finding Pirelli!
Please rehide the final stage container well as it has already been muggled once.
Happy Caching!!
