Geocache Description:

This is a moderate 2.6 mile round trip hike along a game commission/gas well road. AGT Jefferson County #03.

This cache is part of the ten-county Allegheny GeoTrail project (see link below). It contains a special stamp to be used in your GeoTrail passport, which you'll want to obtain before setting out to find the cache. Please do not remove the stamp! Get your passport stamped at 6 or more AGT caches within a county, and get a FREE geocoin representing that county. There are ten different coins to collect, plus a bonus 11th coin if you get all 10 counties. Click the logo for more information!

The Deep Woods AGT Cache is located in the heart of State Game Lands No. 54 in the northern part of Jefferson County. The hike in starts at a parking area (41° 20.507 N, 078° 58.730 W) off of SR949. Follow the gated road to an intersection (here: 41° 21.436 N, 78° 58.346 W) and turn right. This road will take you to a number of game fields, and the cache is hidden along the edge of the first field you enter.

This trail is loaded with nature's finest, including wild blueberries, teaberries (wintergreen), sweetfern (makes a nice tea), and sassafras. It has an awesome aroma of sweetfern in the summer and fall, and the absolute best time to hike it is when the mountain laurel is in bloom (mid June to early July). We have seen countless deer back here and have even come across a black bear feeding on blueberries.

If you are feeling adventurous, the first leg of the "Jefferson County's Northiest" geocache is not too far from this cache's final location!
