Lt. Birrell Memorial Cache Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Ham3: FJ JAY and I went to the location of the cache and the Lt. Birrell Memorial site. Neither seems to be there anymore. There has been a LOT of weather- related activity with broken wood all other the area. In fact, it is probably dangerous to do much walking around in the area. Therefore, I am archiving the cache. It was great while it lasted. Alan, ham3

On a Friday morning, October 24, 1941 a flight of 19 Curtis P-40 Warhawks of the 57th Pursuit Group took off from March Field near Riverside en route to McCord Army Airfield in Washington state. While flying over the Sierra Nevada they encountered a freak storm. Of the 19 aircraft, only four made it to their scheduled refueling stop at McClellen Field near Sacramento. One of the planes piloted by Lt. W. H. Birrell, a 1940 graduate of West Point crashed near Greys Mountain. He was killed on impact. Lt. Birrell's plane slammed into the forest and burst into flames from spilled fuel. His family has since placed a plaque at the crash site and the military has removed all of the plane expect for the Allison Engine which is still visable. This cache is intended to memorialize Lt. Birrell. You can reach a good parking site about 300 feet away from the crash site with only a two wheel drive vehicle. The parking coordinates are approximately: N 37 24.565, W 119 32.490. You will know you are at the correct spot when you see a tree with duct tape around the trunk. There is a well marked trail to the crash site. The cache is about 100 feet from the crash site and is not too hard to find.
