Geocache Description:

Another Australian icon in the Mid North, BHP made Whyalla what it is today - a City.

BHP - Whyalla

Those of you who worked at this 'institution' in it's early days might recognize the name - it may have been the name of your mate who's tools were in your tool bag.
You see, all company tools were stamped with the initials - B.H.P. ,and after working long hours, one easily forgot that the spanner you were just using came from the company store, not out of your own tool bag!
So some workers caught with tools stamped B.H.P. in their bag, would explain that it was on loan from their mate, Bruce Henry Peterson.!
Of course there were other names that were used, but you get the idea.(I'd love to hear in your logs of any others you may have come across.)
I did my time there (a few years) in the Rolling Mill, at No. 2 Stand pulpit, and despite the high levels of dust, noise, heat and danger, it was a worthwhile experience.

Does anyone remember the safety tokens they used to give out? (The ones used to trade for goods off the truck)

Or....

The Shipyard just up the road?

Or....

Dashing to the clockrace at 4pm, only to wait an eternity in line to clock off?

Well, these things are gone now, and B.H.P. isn't even B.H.P. anymore, but rather........
OneSteel

A VERY BRIEF HISTORY

* Construction of the harbour, blast furnace and shipyards commenced in 1939 and resulted in a dramatic increase in Whyalla's population as workers arrived to complete these projects. The town's infrastructure grew correspondingly to service its growing population.

* In 1941 the blast furnace commenced operations and the first ship was launched from the BHP shipyards(A corvette named the HMAS Whyalla).

* In 1958, BHP announced the decision to build an integrated steelworks at their site in Whyalla.

* The construction of the Whyalla steelworks was finally completed in 1968, when the pellet plant and the coke ovens both began operation.

* The workforce of BHP in 1970 had reached 6,950.

* The BHP long products division was divested in 2000 to form OneSteel.
