Geocache Description:

Hoodoos in Formation

A hoodoo is formed from an erosional feature of alternating denisties of material. The softer aggregate (or the topsoil) is visible in the hillside sitting atop a narrow band of harder bedrock.

As the top erodes down the hill, the eroded material goes around the bedrock, providing a shelter for the softer material below the bedrock.

These hoodoos are currently unformed, but in a few thousand years (without human intervention) there will likely be hoodoos here, similar to the ones seen at Willow Creek, east of Drumheller.

To log this cache, estimate the thickness of the layer of topsoil, and estimate the thickness of the layer of bedrock.

For bonus credit, try to estimate the height of the exposed bedrock to the next layer that wouldn't erode. (Hint: you're on the SIDE of a hill.)

Also note a little further back on the path that there are in fact some hoodoos already forming.

PLEASE STAY ON ESTABLISHED TRAILS. OUR HOBBY RELIES UPON THIS SIMPLE GESTURE.
