Pussir, R.I.P.
In praise of an SPCA cat
In 1994 I brought home the fattest cat I could find at the SPCA. We called him Quincy for about a week and then we started calling him Pussir. He had thick, soft fur and he would jump on your lap for some love.
he was needy
He did many bad things.
Our dog, Gus, loved Pussir, but Pussir did not love Gus. We found claws stuck in Gus?s nose. Pussir would let Gus snuggle in with his nose now and then, and now and then he would jump on Gus?s face with his claws.
He murdered birds.
He scratched up the screening on our windows. Because of this we would leave the screens up so that he could climb on the tree, jump on the roof and get in the house . One time he caught a blackbird and brought it in the house. He lost interest in the bird and let it go and it flew around my kitchen, pooping on the curtains.
He liked to fight with other cats. His ears were all chewed to pieces. Our neighbour Lorna, asked us to keep him inside, because her vet bills were too high.
We could not leave food unattended. We found cat footprints in spaghetti sauce on the kitchen counter. lasagne was his favourite pasta.
There was no sleeping-in at our house, Pussir would get in bed, purr loudly at ear level, or lick Phil?s head, or gently rub his paw down my cheek. if that did not work, he would sit on you somewhere, your legs, your feet, and if you were sleeping on your back, he would get in your face and purr. He wanted to be fed!!!
Pussir was a crowd-pleaser. He would lie down in the middle of a group of people and roll around showing his belly just begging to be rubbed. He would let you spin him around until he got dizzy and then he would stagger off to everyone?s delight.
We loved Pussir for 10 years. This is where it gets sad. One of our good neighbours brought him home to us one night, he must have been tumbled by the wheels of a big truck. he was still alive and he died in my arms.
After he died, Gus the dog lost weight. We thought it must be because he missed the cat. I believe it was because Gus was eating Pussir?s food. Ha Ha.
