This cache has been archived.

seanlee1969: Time to sing the last Song of Wyoming. This was a good one while it lasted, but it appears to be gone. Thanks for all the visits.

Geocache Description:

This small cache is hidden along a nice little unsigned shortcut road to/from Nevada City (Wyoming Road) that runs between the Old Downieville Highway and Factory Street. This cache is also a good one to pick up on the way back into town from Vole's new caches. Coming from the west, the road looks like someone's driveway; coming from the east, Factory Street turns into Wyoming Road.

The cache location has some historical significance, being within or very near the old Gold Tunnel mine claim. According to Bean's History of Nevada County (1867), the Gold Tunnel mine was not only the first mine opened in Nevada township, but is the only one among those worked at an early day that did not prove a disastrous failure.

If you're coming from town, you won't be able to miss the stone house that is sitting next to the road (you could nearly reach out and use the door knocker on the way by). This building used to be a PG&E Substation in the early 1900's (and is also my wife's favorite house in Nevada City).

As there is limited parking on Wyoming Road, suggested parking is at: N 39.26134 W 121.02483 (approximately 200' east of the cache--please note these are coords in decimal degrees). You will see a bunch of vinca growing at the parking spot, which is a common plant seen on or near mining sites in Nevada County.

Enjoy your walk, ride or drive to this cache (named after my favorite John Denver song). There is room in the cache for a few small trade items and a Washington gold dollar for the FTF. If you have trouble with the coords (best I could do under the tree cover), you might want to check out the hint. Good luck!
