Geocache Description:

Two stage multi in downtown Bernardsville, N.J.. Micro with log and pencil and enough room for small geocoins.

Welcome to Bernardsville, New Jersey! Pronounced “burn-erds-ville”. Any other pronunciation will define you as an out-of-towner!

Cache is Not Located at the Published Coordinates!

Originally known as Vealtown, in 1840 Bernardsville was renamed for Sir Francis Bernard, the governor of New Jersey from 1758-1760. The introduction of the railroad in 1872 made Bernardsville appealing to wealthy Manhattanites. They built large summer estates here and many monster mansions still exist on the mountain.

The Old Library on nearby Olcott Square is home to a fabled ghost. It was originally a tavern in the 1700’s and according to “Hometown Tales”, it’s haunted. Phyllis Parker’s lover’s lifeless body was discovered in a box inside the tavern and ever since then librarians and patrons have seen the apparition of Phyllis. They claim to hear her Victorian dress rustle on the stairs. More information about this ghost story can be found at the new Bernardsville Library around the corner from the old one.

At the published parking coordinates of this cache you will visit a bronze statue of Millicent Fenwick. One of Bernardsville’s most celebrated citizens, she became a congresswoman at the age of sixty-four. She was renowned for her energy, enthusiasm, style and beauty as well as her pipe smoking. She is thought to be the model for cartoonist Gary Trudeau’s character Lacey Davenport in his comic strip “Doonesbury”.
