Geocache Description:

A quick easy stop. You can park within feet of the cache. You do not have to go inside the fence. I marked it a difficulty of 2 because you may have to search a bit to find it. There are several caches like this around so if you have found one like it then this one will be easy as well.

The front half of this block house was built in the 1920/30's by my great grandfather David Thatcher Ballard. It has since been added and renovated several times. My grandfather and his siblings were born and raised here for a number of years until they moved into an old white house that was standing on the far East corner of this block. (Unfortunately that house is no longer there. It has unfortunately been demolished and replaced by the out of place 2 story townhomes. The old white house was also built by the Ballard family, but not where it stood on the corner in Hurricane. It was originally built in the now ghost town of Grafton. After the Hurricane Canal was finished many of the residents of Grafton vacated and moved to Hurricane. My ancestors were some of them. They came around 1906 and brought with them the old white house, by horse and wagon, piece by piece. When it came time for my great grandfather to build a home, this is the home he built. My Grandfather eventually built next door to the East and later my father built the next house to the East, thus taking up the entire block.

I grew up on this street in between grandparents who were great examples to me. This house has not been in the family for a number of years until this spring when my wife and I had the good fortune to be able to buy it. We look forward to many years here with our chidren growing up near to their grandparents the same as I was.

To some I'm sure this is just another old house on a corner, but to me it is a piece of family history. I thought it would make a great place for our families first cache hide. Enjoy the hunt. If you see us around, stop and say hello. (Note: We have since moved 1 door East but still own this family home. The current residents are great friends and we often still see cachers stop by.)
