Geocache Description:

This is a geologically diverse area with many interesting features in a limited area.

The O.D. von Engeln Preserve features a great diversity of plants, glacial features, and wetland communities in close proximity.

Glacially formed eskers, kames, and kettles combine with varying water chemistries to create these distinct wetland habitats. Eskers and kames are deposits of glacial gravel and sand formed 10,000 to 12,000 years ago. Eskers are sinuous ridges, that formed as meltwater streams deposited gravel as they coursed through tunnels in the retreating glacier towering overhead. Kames are irregular hills formed as gravel was dumped from the melting glacier.

This earthcache will take you along well marked paths and you will not need to nor should you leave the path to claim the cache. Leaving the path will irreversibly damage a very delicate area.

To claim the cache you must answer the following questions in an email to us. Please do not place the answers in the log.

When you are at the site indicated by the coordinates and facing the wetland,

1. What type of formation is behind you?

2. How does that formation affect the wetlands in front of
you?

Please take the time to wander the rest of the park in this geologically and ecologically unique location.

Special thanks to the Nature Conservancy not only for giving us permission to place this cache but also for preserving this wonderful area.
