Geocache Description:

During the time period from September 2004 to July 2007, the Marines and Sailors of 2d Battalion, 3d Marine Regiment deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Through eight months in Afghanistan and seven months in Iraq, these men and their comrades tirelessly worked to enhance the security of both nations and, ultimately, our security here on the home front; 27 of these selfless, brave individuals never came home.

This cache honors the men of the battalion who gave the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation. I was fortunate enough to serve with the men of this unit in both theaters and hope that their sacrifices will be honored by the geocaching community by my telling a small part of their story.

The listed coordinates will lead you on a journey to a historical place of duty of another generation of American patriots. While in Iraq, I hadSecond Battalion the idea to create this cache which has now assumed a life of its own. Though it specifically honors men I served with, may this cache serve as a tribute to every service member who has volunteered to serve in our military in this time of war.

The cache is located in a place that, if approached from a certain direction, seems to discourage visitors. If you are uncomfortable with the seemingly “easy” route, you may begin your quest at N21 15.451 W157 48.121, however, this is a steep climb that will increase the terrain rating to a 3.5 or 4. Cache contains military-related memorabilia so please trade only appropriate patriotic swag. Email requests for alternate routes to the cache will be answered in a few days. Come prepared for a short, steep and memorable hike. Read the hint as you will not be able to log this cache without it.

My deepest gratitude is extended to Team GeoBlast, Team DDKnight, Rasgards, Johnny Rotten, and SilverSurfer73 who began the cleanup process that allowed me to construct this memorial cache upon my return from overseas. Team GeoBlast will maintain this cache for me.

Semper Fidelis
