Castle Hill Multi, Mere. Medium size(1.2ltr) Lock “n” lock box
Car Park co-ords. N51 05.420 W002 16.274
This cache is at Castle Hill on the edge of the Town of Mere in Wiltshire.
To get to the foot of the hill from the free car park on Castle Street, cross the road (busy at times) to the Memorial Garden and walk through to the lane behind. If the kids playground is empty walk on through, if it is in use you may like to walk a yard or two down the lane, to the public pathway that runs beside it to the hill.
As a local kid ( a long time ago) over the years I, among loads of others, scaled this hill the hard way. Straight up the front !!! My gran must have had kittens watching from below as my sister and myself clawed our way up. It is way too scary to do now.
On the top is a Memorial to The 43rd Wessex Division. There are steps up the major part of the hill with a hand rail, scaling the front may look like fun and there is a pronounced track, but it is not recommended. When damp the chalk can be very slippy.
This cache is not suitable for wheelchairs or buggies, (because of the steps) Children should be accompanied and kept hold of at all times. The whole cache is done on a grass, and in places, tarmac footpath, with sections of good substantial steps. The only deviation is the last 20 feet from the path to the cache. In some parts there are some nettles and overhanging shrubs. At various times of the year you can find growing here Cowslips, Primroses, Violets, Common Spotted Orchids, Cranesbill, Scabious, Etc.
Off the top of the hill you have a 365 degree view. Looking out over Mere itself you have Duncliffe hill in the distance straight ahead, Shaftesbury to the left of Duncliffe, Bourton and Zeals are to the right, though not visible from here. What are visible are “Burdens” glasshouses and in front of you is The Church of St Michael. Behind the hill runs the now diverted A303 which used to run right through the middle of the town. It is still the main London to Exeter road.
There are lots of dog walkers in this area, so for that reason the cache is hidden on the side of the bush furthest from the path. You can sit on the slope here and deal with the find without being too easily noticed.
The cache is done in three stages,
