Geocache Description:

I have chosen this cache spot to replace the original “Allamuchy Mountain Cache” that the Artful Dodger had put out. The original was archived and I know this area is gorgeous, so I wanted another in its place. This is a great park that I have spent many hours in. The local view is outstanding. A brief history of the park, back in the 60’s & 70’s, the state purchased and/or acquired land on both sides of the Muscanetcong River to ultimately dam the river and make ‘Hackettstown Reservoir’. Only after owning the land did the state realize it was not a good solid foundation to hold a huge amount of water. Most of the original land was from the Rutherford and Stuyvesant estates. So it became Allamuchy Mountain State Park. Named after the local small town that had been named for a local Lenapi Indian Chief “ Allamuchahokkingen”. This name means “place within the hills”. The name was shortened a couple times since the first settlement in 1715. I have included 2 special prizes for the first & second finders of this new cache. This is a regular ammo box that has been painted camo. I have regular geo-caching swag that includes a slinky, Smokey Bear stuff, cars, cards, cookbook, etc. For the scouts that do Geo-caching lessons with your troops, I have included a separate ziplock bag with an assortment of scout pins and patches for the trading/taking. For you non-‘scouters’, if you like a patch, you are welcome to it. I have put a travel bugs in this cache that is starting its new ‘life’, “Mama Polar Bear” that wants to visit parks & forests and maybe even Alaska. I suggest you start at the Waterloo Road end of Sussex Branch Trail. Head down the trail and make a left onto the white blazed trail and cross the creek and follow this trail to and then take the Pebble Trail (yellow blazes) to the Highlands Trail and this should get you close to cache. Note that many different hunting seasons are allowed in this part of the park, so maybe wear bright clothes.
