INDIANA SPIRIT QUEST #579

"Collier Cemetery"

This quest will bring you to the Collier Cemetery in Washington Township of Monroe County. This is a family cemetery but has been well maintained and is in wonderful condition. It's not an extreemly old cemetery, with the earliest burials from late in the 19th century. However, there are actually more burial spots marked with field stones than there are engraved headstones. It is impossible to know just how old the field stones are.

Civil War Officer

James Henry Collier has the only military stone in the cemetery. He is a 4th great uncle of mine. He went by Henry. He was a 2nd Lieutenant in the 33rd Indiana. This regiment started the war badly and was captured almost in total during their first major action at the Battle of Thompson's Station in Tennessee. After the regiment was paroled and returned to service, they were given menial guard duty and kept out of the front lines. They got their chance for vendication in 1864 when they took part in Sherman's campaign in the south and subsequent march to the sea. Soldiers from the 33rd Indiana were amongst the first to enter Atlanta after it was abandoned by the Confederates.

Unmarked Field Stones

This cemetery has about 25 engraved headstones and about 30 graves marked with simple field stones. As someone who is a descendant of the Colliers from this area, it's a bit frustrating to not know who might be buried in these graves.

The cache container is A CAMOUFLAGED PRESCRIPTION BOTTLE. You MUST sign the log to claim a Smiley. The cache is not located near a grave... If you find a fallen US flag, please stick it back in the ground. As always, please be respectful of our pioneer dead, and cache in, trash out.

None genuine without this official SixDogTeam seal.
