The geocache hidden at the posted coordinates is a regular
geocache, however, it is also part of the Allegheny GeoTrail (AGT),
a publicly funded project designed to promote a pleasant and
positive experience and image of the Allegheny National Forest
region and its gateway communities. The AGT utilizes the growing
interest in geocaching to assist both residents and visitors to the
area in learning more about the unique attractions in the ten
participating counties. This cache contains a unique self inking
rubber stamp which you should use to stamp your Allegheny GeoTrail
Passport to verify that you found it. When you have found a minimum
of six AGT caches, you will be eligible to have your AGT passport
validated and receive a commemorative AGT trackable geocoin at
participating locations. You must have your official AGT passport
with you when you find this cache in order to stamp it. Click on
the Allegheny GeoTrail Logo below to visit the AGT website at
www.alleghenygeotrail.com for complete details and a listing of
participating locations where you may pick up and validate AGT
passports to receive your souvenir geocoin, trackable at
www.geocaching.com .
The cache can be found at Sugar Run off PA Route 321. This
area is very picturesque in all seasons, one of the best being
fall. My dad and I spent a lot of time over here fishing, hunting,
and just having fun. You can park on the south side of PA 321 near
the Sugar Run boat access and make a short walk to the Willow Bay
ATV access road, which is the Bullis Hollow Road. There is an old
road going off to the right as soon as you get onto the Bullis
Hollow Road. Take this road about 250 feet and it will place you
close to the cache.
A very short walk from the cache and you can look down onto Sugar
Bay and see almost to the main channel of the dam. There was a
small village here before the dam was build. In the winter when
they let the water out, you can still see the remnants of the
village. You can see old foundations, the old road, and other areas
showing where people lived. A word of caution, it is very muddy
when they let the water out.
A few dam facts: The dam was completed in 1965 at a total cost of
$108 million dollars. The reservoir created by the dam is located
in Warren and McKean Counties, Pa., and Cattaraugus County, New
York and drains an area of 2,180 square miles. The dam itself is
179 feet above the streambed and is 1,877 feet wide at the top. The
length of the reservoir is 24.2 miles long and at summer pool,
covers 12,080 acres. The normal summer level of the reservoir is
1,328 feet above sea level. In Pennsylvania, the reservoir is
completely surrounded by the Allegheny National Forest. Enjoy the
cache and the area surrounding it. Remember, Cache In, Trash Out.
Use extra caution during hunting season. Be sure to wear orange
while caching in hunting season.
The cache contains odds and ends including some Canadian pencils,
rubber balls, trash bags for your vehicle, toys, a number of
keychains, etc. I have also placed three un-activated Geocoins in
the cache for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd to find. Enjoy and
Thanks.
