Near the summit of Black Hill (582m) on the, now, alternative
Pennine Way.
When I walked the Pennine Way in 1983, the main route took me north
west from Black Hill over Dean Head Moss to the highest point of
the A635 - the old Snoopy's laybay, then onwards over Featherbed
Moss to Standedge.
It was tough terrain along a faint boggy peat path. But I'd set out
to follow a path along the crest of the Pennines which is what this
did.
The alternative Pennine Way at that time took you down Wessenden, a
longer route with more descent but with the benefit of a stopover
in Marsden.
Carrying a tent, it seemed an unnecessary diversion.
How things change.
Now the original Pennine Way has been demoted to the bench, with
the route to Wessenden becoming the main Way & getting paved in
the process.
It doesn't seem to matter that it doesn't follow the crest any more
- mere pedantics.
I still think the route over Dean Head Moss & Featherbed Moss
is preferable to the Wessenden route. Though you need to pick your
time.
After a dry spell, the peat can be dry yet spongy & a real joy
to walk on.
