A wonderful viewpoint along the White Rose Forest trail
The Colne Valley Tree Society, with support from the White Rose Forest & in partnership with Yorkshire Water has created a circular walk around Butterley reservoir. Agreements have been made with tenant farmers to remove sheep to allow the process of natural regeneration of the moorland fringe and ancient woodland around the reservoir, bringing back the Wild Wood.
Schofields Barn has been partially restored as a viewing point.
The bracken beds around Schofields' Barn are important for ground nesting birds like the Twite who nest mid April to the end of July, seeking food from the hay meadows across the reservoir.
The viewpoint is wonderful, seeing straight down the valley to Bank Bottom Mills in Marsden. You also get good views to your left of the award winning new woodland, just below the golf course. To your right stretches the reservoir with Binn Edge above.
Continuing to follow the White Rose Forest trail beyond the barn will take you through the award winning woodland, down a set of steps beyond the dam then up another set of steps & back to the parking where the Wessenden track starts.
