Small, quiet, country cemetery
Catfish Cemetery is the only thing left of the Village of Catfish. Catfish became recognized about 1836 when voting places and precincts were established. Catfish contained the first business establishments in the area, a post office, store, black-smith shop, school, church and a mill. As you will see, the cemetery is arranged in such a way that you can tell there was once a church at this location. It was around 1882 that the Methodist Church was abandoned with the congregation divided. Those from the south built a church in Isabel and those in the north built at Brocton. This story has always fascinated me, as has this cemetery.
Catfish Cemetery doesn't have a real access road. So you will need to park along the road and walk back. This cache should be an easy find, however, my little helper wasn't getting a very good signal from above, so it may be off just a little bit, (although I doubt is makes a difference). One very important thing to know, this area is deer hunted pretty hard, so please be aware of the seasons that may be in, and don’t venture into the surrounding woods. We want everyone to stay safe out there. The cache is in the cemetery so there shouldn't be a problem.
Around the corner, up on a hill is another old family cemetery from about the same time as Catfish. This is Zimmerman Cemetery. It is on private property so please don’t venture back. I'd like to put a cache here sometime, if only the owner of the property would give me permission.
