This geocache is hidden near the confluence of Pekin Run and North
Fork Creek, a few miles north of Brookville, PA. This is a
beautiful stream any time of year, and is popular during trout
season. On any given day you may see deer, turkey, and maybe even a
bald eagle.
Begin this hike at the parking area off of Richardsville Road at
41° 12.974'N, 79° 01.466'W. There will be an ATV trail that heads
downstream (west) and is marked as walk-in fishing (the Posted
signs are to keep hunters out). Follow this trail all the way to
where the two streams meet.
An alternative (and shorter hike or bike - WARNING: requires
crossing the creek) is to start at the access road at Moore Bridge
(N 41° 13.696 W 079° 02.945). Just follow the road south until you
are close enough to cross North Fork.
The cache is hidden a little ways up towards the hillside to
prevent its muggling - there is a popular camping site in the area.
The only real twist in the trail occurs near 41° 13.16'N, 79°
2.22'W where it loops around to cross a little stream. Just keep
following the main trail and all will be well.
If you are feeling more adventurous, you may follow Pekin Run
along its banks. This will be a bit more adventurous, as its banks
have a number of large rocks and cuts some deep ravines. You can
cross Pekin Run at a footbridge about a third of the way to the
cache, but when you get to the cache area, you will need to be on
the northern bank.
A bit of history for this area: the Bartlett family owned a
chair-making factory in the town of Pekin, which was located near
the present parking area, across the creek. W. Russell owned a
sawmill at the mouth of Pekin: today you can see the remnants of
the splash dam on the south side of Pekin Run near its mouth. A
small tramroad was built up Pekin Run that connected with the
Brookville Railway: you actually hike on parts of its old grade on
your way to the cache.
