This cache is part of the ten-county Allegheny
GeoTrail project. It contains a special stamp to be used in
your GeoTrail passport, which you'll want to obtain before setting
out to find the cache. Please do not remove the stamp! Get your
passport stamped at 6 or more AGT caches within a county, and get a
FREE geocoin representing that county. There are ten different
coins to collect, plus a bonus 11th coin if you get all 10
counties. Click the logo for more information!
Begin this nice little walk at the Heath station parking
area/canoe launch off of SR949 near the Clarion River (41°
20.983'N, 79° 0.941'W). Cross the road with caution and enjoy the
Heath Station trout hatchery - don't forget to feed the fish! Then
make your way towards the spillway in front of the Heath Pump
Station and follow the trail that heads back into the woods.
The trail will eventually fade, so stick close to Callen Run.
Did you know that the first lumber railroad to use a steam engine
in Pennsylvania was operated here in 1864? The old railroad grade
isn't very visible anymore until you get up the Johns Run valley
quite a ways. Try to find it some day; it is a ways past this
cache.
Follow the stream to the jeep trail that crosses the creek, then
follow the road to the cache. Look for an old CCC rock splash dam
in the cache vicinity. Did you also know that the first oil well
drilled in Jefferson County was in the Callen Run valley, and was
started in 1895?
Don't forget to take in the old giant white pines and hemlocks
that now tower over this valley! These were what brought loggers to
these parts of the state so long ago.
Please wear plenty of orange during hunting season. Check the PA
Game Commission web site for information on hunting schedules and
regulations. Happy caching!
