Geocache Description:

Here's a scenic treat along a piece of the old highway to Kenai. This was the only route before the cliffs below were blasted out. The road is rather rough, with bumps and sharp turns; don't try it with a motorhome or long wheelbase rig. Start right at the mile 45 marker, across from the road to the Quartz Creek campground. The road goes through, but to avoid the worst potholes, go .75 mile further up the highway and go in the west end. A careful turnaround is possible.

Until it burned down in 1975, the Our Point of View Lodge provided the finest scenic stop along this stretch of the highway. Located on this lost piece of the old road, Our Point of View had a sunken conversation pit around a huge rock fireplace with a bar behind it, a restaurant, and overnight accommodations upstairs. The wall of windows looking out over Kenai Lake made it a popular place for a meal for locals and folks driving out from Seward. Only an overgrown wide spot remains now; it's hard to imagine there was ever room for a nice lodge up there.

Nowadays, you can still get the best photos of the north end of Kenai Lake from this viewpoint. Bring a picnic and enjoy, just don't kick a rock down onto the traffic below!

The cache is hidden a short distance above the old road. There are several prizes for the first finders, including a certificate and a pass for a free lunch at the Sunrise Inn. The original loot includes a new Travel Bug and another just stopping by.
