Geocache Description:

This cache is placed near the location of the Shelbiana Public School. It should be a quick P & G.

Under Construction

WPA Plaque

The 8-room school building was constructed by the WPA (Works Progress Administration), using stone from the nearby Dry Fork area of the Shelbiana community. Construction was completed in 1936.

Time Capsule was Placed Here

Initially, grades K-9 were taught here, but that was later changed (c. early 1940's) to K (aka "primer") through 8.

On the "Playground"

For several years, those needing to "use the facilities" had to take a trip outdoors, but later there were 2 very large indoor restrooms developed, one on each of the building's two floors - the boys' room was on one floor and the girls' room on the other.

Shelbiana Public School, c. 1988

The school has been closed for many years now (c. 1971-72) and, unfortunately, has fallen into severe disrepair. In its heyday, however, this school was an integral part of its community. The building and property on which it sits are now privately owned.

The Principal is on the far left

My late grandfather was the principal here for approximately 25 years (before my time). I enjoyed listening to his "school days" stories and how he dealt with some interesting situations. I remember the first time I ever heard the word 'disciplinarian' was when it was used by some of his former students to describe him.

The Old "Shelby Bridge"

Note that you do not have to go on the school property to get this cache; however, the building is in plain view from the cache site. There is a wide spot beside the road just before the cache's location. I would suggest parking there.
