Geocache Description:

This cache is named after what you see in the water right in front of you.

Bellambi reef stretches from the shore out about 2 kilometres or so not far from the entrance to Wollongong harbour.
Shipping was one of the main ways to transport goods in the 1800 and early to mid 1900s to a growing Illawarra. During bad weather the reef was like a magnet to sailing ships and steamers alike taking dozens of vessels to a watery grave and to this day small boats still come to grief in the shallow breakers on the reef.
Ships like the S.S. Munmorah, the Catherine, Five Islands, S.S. Llewellyn and the Queen of Nations which is still visible at Corrimal beach after rough seas remove the sand to name a few.
Brandy rocks the next group of rocks to the south was so named after a ship ran agound loosing its load of barrels of brandy and before the constabulary could gather the barrels much had been removed or consumed by the locals many of whome could not get off the beach through intoxication.
The reef still holds many parts of sunken vessels that can bee seen when snorkeling, while the mighty boiler still remains in the shallows like it has for 70 or more years.
This area is a dog exercise location so the pooch is free to roam but beware, if you come at night bring your gumboots as many owners do not pick up after their animals and there are calling cards eveywhere.
Please leave hidden exactly how you found it.
