Geocache Description:

This cache is located on Antelope Island, the largest island in the Great Salt Lake. It is located on the beach in the White Rock Bay near the Campground. The terrain is easy, but it will be necessary to walk a short distance through some loose sand to find this cache.

This cache is located on one of the Antelope Island white sand beaches. As the Great Salt Lake is a dead sea, the lake level rises and falls depending on the climate changes. The first scientific measurements were taken in 1849 and since then the lake level has varied by 20 feet, shifting the shoreline in some places as much as 15 miles. Presently, it is a significant hike from the campground and beach to get to the water edge.
The Oolitic sand is actually formed in the lake and is made up of concentric layers of calcium carbonate (lime). Take a close look at the sand. Most of the grains are smooth and perfectly round.
