Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
The cache has been upgraded to a regular ammo box, suitably
identified. It contains a log book, pen, and appropriate swag for
trading. It is large enough for all trackable items. The cache is
located about 5 metres off a highly muggled ‘public’
trail, on the west side of the ‘Butter’, and only about
100 metres from an appropriate parking area. There is no need to
trespass through the adjacent private property.
This cache replaces an earlier, nearby, cache (GCKG9Z); the first
one my grampa helped me find when I was four years old. Now
I’m much older and grampa and I think other geocachers will
still want to see this amazing Buttermilk Machine.
About 100 years ago, the machine would have been full of pine logs
cut from the nearby forests. Some would have taken two years to
travel from here all the way to Trenton, Ontario to be made into
timbers for ships.
Now, the dam helps prevent spring flooding; and the machine
provides ‘buttermilk’ to keep the boat-locks on the
Trent-Severn Waterway full in the summer. You can read all about
this at the nearby information plaque. Hope you enjoy seeing this
‘Bigger, Better, Butter’ machine.
