Geocache Description:

This is a good starting point for exploring the rest of the northern Drakensberg’s caches.
A nice roadside cache. Park at the following Co-Ords; S28 33.202 E29 04.638 and walk to the cache site as there is not parking space at the cache area. The walk is about 150 meters.

The valley below is the access path to the Northern Drakensberg of Kwazulu Natal. With a world heritage site included, the Northern Drakensberg is defiantly the out doors persons play ground.
Facilities in the are range from peaceful picnic spots to action adventure centers and a series of “watering holes” to enjoy spectacular sunsets. Other than the normal coastal or desert sunsets, the Northern Drakensberg provides for magical cloud formations and color displays.
The name of the Pass, Oliviershoek, came from the Police station that is situated further down in the valley. As the local historians has indicated, the Police station was established before the local town of Bergville. And the police station was named after the Olivier family farm.
Structures behind the view(er) is part of the Drakensberg Pumped Storage scheme. The dames visible below is all part of the Thugela Vaal scheme. The scheme was built to assist in the transferring water from the Thugela catchment’s area into the Vaal water scheme. (Sterkfontein and Driekloof dam). The structures are the surge chambers for the waterways connected to the Turbines situated 450meters vertically below. When the main inlet valves opens/closes the water hammer is absorbed through the surge chambers.

All the interesting facts of the Drakensberg Pumped storage scheme are available through the visitors center and tours are also available by appointment.
