A 750ml snaplock container a short walk from a busy local
attraction
Loadpit Beck is the stream running through Shipley Glen. It is
named after the small Late Bronze Age iron ore (or lode) workings
or ‘bloomeries’. The land along the western side of Lodepit Beck
was quarried (called Eldwick Beck Quarry) and in the second half of
the 19th century, this quarry was extended to the eastern side of
the Beck. A bridge was constructed over the beck at the northern
end to access the new quarry, which by 1890 was disused. It
consists of a small, irregularly voussoired arch just spanning the
channel. There was originally no parapet to this bridge though
modern fencing has been erected to form parapets.
There are several other caches nearby and a circular walk up one
side of the Glen and down the other takes about an hour, but is not
suitable for buggies etc. The western side of the Glen is much
quieter than the eastern side but is still quite busy with runners
and dog walkers so some stealth may be required.
The cache is located a short way off the path on the western side
of the glen down a steepish bank between the path and the beck, so
care is needed especially in wet weather.
Parking is plentiful along Glen Road on the eastern side of the
Glen and you can cross the beck by the bridge at N53°51.402',
W1°48.336'
