Geocache Description:

FTF: ynds, #1camokid and sweet thing

A cave, is a natural underground void large enough for a human to enter. Some people suggest that the term 'cave' should only apply to cavities that have some part which does not receive daylight; however, in popular usage, the term includes smaller spaces like sea caves, rock shelters and grottos.

Speleology is the science of exploration and study of all aspects of caves. Exploring a cave for recreation or science may be called "caving", "potholing", or "spelunking".

CanCaver

New Brunswick caves can be found in limestone, gypsum, and sandstone. While one does not usually connect caving with New Brunswick, it does have some very nice small caves of various origins.

Rockwood Park in Saint John contains three caves; Harbell’s Cave, Howe’s Cave and Owens Lake Cave. Cavers have entered these caves numerous times over the years, Howes cave has dates going back to 1730. If you want to see photos of cavers in these caves google ‘Harbells cave’!

All three of these caves have traditional caches located nearby:

Return to Harbell's Cave GCWRJK
Happy Spelunking at Howe's Cave GC7FE1
Owens Lake Cave and Underwater River GC9138

To claim the earthcache, you have to find the most accessible cave in the park, Harbell’s cave. The easiest way to find the cave is to enter Rockwood Park, park at N 45° 17.830 W 066° 03.110 and follow the “Clean Air Trail” to the quoted cache coordinates. Also notice the karst features on the hike in.

In order to log this earthcache:

1. Please post a picture of you, your group and/or your GPS at the entrance to Harbell’s Cave. As per Jan 1, 2011 guideline changes, photos are now optional.

Also, e-mail me the answers to the following questions:
2. What are the approximate dimensions (ie X feet by Y feet) of the entrance to Harbell’s cave?
3. Do some research on caves and name one of the geologic processes that form caves?

Do not post the answers in your log, even encrypted.

You do not have to wait for confirmation from me to log your find. However, any logs that DO NOT meet ALL requirements will be deleted.

Special thanks to the City of Saint John for allowing this earth cache in Rockwood Park and to LongReacher for graciously allowing me to place this EarthCache near his traditional cache at Harbell’s Cave.

Note: Please do not enter any of the caves, unless you are a trained “caver” with the proper equipment. The City of Saint John and Rockwood Park do not accept responsibility for any injury associated with entering the caves.
