This cache has been archived.

Rana Pirica:
Hello,

It is Rana Pirica, the geocache maintenance frog, once again hopping through your area to check on geocache maintenance.

Since there has been no owner activity on this cache page and it has been over 30 days since the request to perform maintenance, this cache has been archived. Please remove any remaining cache components if you have not already done so. If there are questions about the archival or if you would like it to be re-considered for listing please e-mail me or your local reviewer in response to this archival, and we will help to unarchive your cache if possible. I want to thank you for the time that you have taken to contribute to geocaching in the past and look forward to seeing your further participation in the future.

Sincerely,

Rana Pirica

Geocache Description:

This cache is the first in the Dihydrogen Monoxide caches, created to show people some of the scenic parts of the upper catchment area for the Brisbane River.

The clues involve some simple math so you might like to bring something to write on and with if you normally cache paperless.

I have also included the waypoints of:

- A nearby picnic area with swimming hole.
- A interesting installation related to the operation of the dam.
(See the end of this document for those waypoints)

Proceed to listed co-ordinates where you will find plenty of room to park.
--------------------------------------------------------------------

The co-ordinates at the top of this listing are for the car park.

To get there follow the Spillway Common signs at the southern end of the dam. (It's the last left turn off the highway before you reach the dam wall.

From the car park make your way to WP1 at S27 23.772 E152 36.526, the observation platform.

To think, at one stage the spray from the water coming out of the spillway would actually wet you from here!!

To find WP2 you will need to answer the following questions:

What is the generation capacity in Megawatts of the Wivenhoe
small-hydro plant?
[AB] __ __

How many homes does this facility power?
[CDLL] __ __ __ __

What is the saving in thousands of tonnes in greenhouse gases?
[FG] __ __

Checksum #1:
A + B + C + D + F + G = 17

WP2 can be found at the following co-ordinates:

S qq rr.ttt
E uuu xx.yyy

qq = 3 * (A+C+F) ----> __ __

rr = FB ----> __ __

ttt = [D+F+G] BA ----> __ __ __

S __ __ __ __ . __ __ __

uuu = G[A+G]F ----> __ __ __

xx = CD+F ----> __ __

yyy = [AB+GB]C ----> __ __ __

E __ __ __ __ __ . __ __ __

--------------------------------------------------------------------

At WP2 you will need to answer the following questions to find the cache:

How many brown insulators are on the transformer complex immediately to your right?
[H] __

How many grey aluminium boxes sit across the top of the spillway gates?
[I, 2 digits] __ __

Checksum #2:
H + I + F + G = 22

The cache can be found at the following co-ordinates:

S QQ RR.TTT
E UUU XX.YYY

QQ = H+I+D+B+G ----> __ __

RR = 23 ----> 23

TTT = [(H*I)-15][H-B] ----> __ __ __

S __ __ __ __ . __ __ __

UUU = [I/10] [(I*5)+2] ----> __ __ __

XX = H*A ----> __ __

YYY = [6*I] [H-C] ----> __ __ __

E __ __ __ __ __ . __ __ __

See coordinates below for the picnic area close by where you can stop to eat lunch and have a swim.

I have also listed a WP for the turnoff to the Splityard Creek Hydro pumping facility. This facility is used to ensure peak electricity demands can be met in the area

This is quite an interesting piece of engineering. The water is pumped from the lower dam into the upper dam and then drained back out to operate the turbines and generate electricity, with the process repeated as needed.

Picnic and swimming area:
S27 23.784 E152 36.605

Turnoff to other interesting dam infrastructure:
S27 24.900 E152 38.046 and continue 7km up the road (on the right).
