Drumlins of Morley Flats
As you drive along the #1, you may notice these little hills in
the middle of an almost totally flat area. You may think that these
are merely part of the foothills, but I have discovered that you’d
be incorrect.
These little hills that you can see are called “Drumlins”. A
drumlin is a glacial feature that is somewhat under debate as to
how it is formed. What is known is that they are small hills,
sometimes up to 45 meters in height. They are sort of whale shaped,
with one end quite blunt and high, narrowing down on the other
end.
The narrowing end indicates the direction of the glacial flow.
With regards to how they’re created, I quote from Wikipedia:
“There are many theories as to the exact mode of origin and
plenty of controversy among geologists interested in geomorphology.
Some consider them a direct formation of the ice, while a theory
proposed since the 1980s by John Shaw and others postulates
creation by a catastrophic flooding release of highly pressurized
water flowing underneath the glacial ice. Either way, they are
thought to be a waveform (similar to ripples of sand at the bottom
of a stream). It is also poorly understood why drumlins form in
some glaciated areas and not in others. They are often associated
with ribbed moraines.”
To log this cache:
1) Email the cache owner with the general direction in which the
drumlins in this area face. (Which way did the glaciers move?)
2) Estimate the height of two of the drumlins in the area. Please
give the approximate coordinates of the drumlins in question. (They
are usually on private property, so please do NOT go onto one of
them.)
3) Please post of a photo of you (or just your GPSr) with a drumlin
in the background. THIS PHOTO IS NECESSARY.
Thanks!
