Scotch Settlement ArboretumArea History
In 1815—140 Scots came from Lord Selkirk's Red River Settlement in Manitoba eventually making their way to what is know as the Scotch Settlement in West Gwillimbury. A rich history unfolds in this area with the establishment of the first school and church building (1823) known as Auld Kirk. (see: "The Settlement of Auld Kirk" Cache). In 1865 a second church was established. Originally known as "The 2nd West Gwillimbury Presbyterian Church" — over time, the church became known as "The Scotch Settlement Presbyterian Church". West of this church, the Scotch Settlement Arboretum was created by the Bondhead and District Horticultural Society.
