Geocache Description:

It is by the Cultural Center at the old Iroquois Lodge site

The Cultural Center at the old Iroquois Lodge site

This land used to be owned by Ellen Marshall. It was an 80 acre allotment that she acquired by the Treaty of 1865. She most likely lost it due to back taxes, as most Native people did not understand that the land was to be taxed. It was then made into a ski hill that was called the Iroquois Lodge. The Bay Mills Tribe re-acquired the land in 1994 after the ski hill closed and turned it into a culture lodge. The Ojibwe Charter School currently uses it as a meeting place to hear Native Storytellers share our culture with us.
