Geocache Description:

DAYLIGHT ONLY! This cache is part of the “Long Ago But Not Far Away – Spring Mountain” historical series especially for kids. Previous finds for this cache will be counted. If you had logged this cache before the clue card was in the container, please send an email requesting the clue.

General rules: Anyone may log the caches in this series, but kids (12 years old and under) can earn special awards. Kids logging any 4 of the 6 caches in either the Long Ago But Not Far Away - Spring Mountain series or the Long Ago But Not Far Away - Fairview series and emailing the answers to the Kids' Answer Sheet will receive a certificate and a special prize for each series.

In addition, kids and adults should collect the number clues from inside the containers as they visit the caches in the series. The clues will help you find the Spring Mountain Bonus cache. The same method will be used to locate the Fairview Bonus cache in the Long Ago But Not Far Away – Fairview series. Spring Mountain clue cards look like this:

Kids earning both the Spring Mountain and the Fairview certificates and logging both bonus caches will receive a special geocoin. Cachers over 12 years old will not receive a prize, certificate, or geocoin. Multiple children in a family may each receive their own awards, but each child requesting an award must have been present during all the cache hunts. Make sure you print out the Kids' Answer Sheet for Spring Mountain before beginning this project!

To claim your award(s), click “Spring Mountain Community Club” just below the cache title and send an email including:
(1) the names of the caches you found along with the answers to their questions,
(2) your name and caching name, and
(3) your age.

(Information will be used to verify your qualification and print your certificate and will then be deleted. Parents, please contact us if you prefer not to share this information.)

Been Farmin' Long?

DAYLIGHT ONLY! Permission has been graciously granted by the landowner, so please treat the property respectfully and do not block the driveway or visit after dark.

Proceed from Old Fort Road along the one-lane gravel Little Pond Road to the parking cords listed below. Please park far enough to the side so that you don’t block the driveway.

Been farmin’ long? This barn has been! It has been the center of a farming operation since before 1880.

The current working farm, like farms in the 1800s, operates on the basis of “sustainable agriculture;” all plants and animals thrive using farm-produced natural fertilizers and feeds. If you’re interested, ask the owner for a farm tour. He loves to educate visitors about sustainable agriculture.

The cache is located beside a 130+ years old post-and-beam barn which was hand built using unpeeled logs. Notice the hewn joints inside and the diagonal slats on the hayloft (second floor) sides. During construction the builders ran out of sawn slats and used what they had – sticks – to cover the last part of the hayloft walls! The sticks remain to this day.

Please enjoy the architecture from outside the barn. You may look in the windows, but don't enter. It is still used to house animals, some of whom might not be friendly. If you want to see the animals up close and personal, find the farmer and ask him. His house is down the path to the right of the parking area.

If you are working toward the kids' Spring Mountain prizes, be sure to write down your description of how the barn and the geocache container are similar.
