Kaolin-Abbau

Kaolin, auch Porzellanerde genannt, wird in Österreich nur an
zwei Stellen abgebaut. Dieser Ort hier in Kriechbaum/Tragwein ist
der größte und auch Firmensitz des größten österreichischen
Kaolinbergbau-Unternehmens, KAMIG. Die für diesen Eartchcache
angegebenen Koordinaten führen euch zu einem Parkplatz entlang
einer öffentlichen Straße, von dem aus der Kaolinabbau und Berge
von Kaolin, inklusive eines kleinen Sees, umgeben vom schönen
Mühlviertler Hügelland, überblickt werden können.
Kaolin ist ein weiches, eisenfreies, weißes Ton-artiges Gestein
das hauptsächlich zur Porzellanherstellung und in der
Papierindustrie verwendet wird. In der modernen geologischen
Bedeutung stellt "Kaolin" einen eher unscharf verwendeten
geologischen Begriff dar, der jegliches weiße, Ton-artige Gestein
bezeichnet, das hauptsächlich Minerale der Kaolingruppe (Khandite)
enthält. Der häufigste Bestandteil ist das Mineral Kaolinit
(

Das Wort "Kaolin" ist aus der chinesischen Stadt Gaoling
entstanden und bedeutet "hügeliger Rücken". Kaolin kommt eher
selten aquf unserer Erde vor. Kriechbaum/Tragwein liegt auf (und
ist umgeben von) Granitfels. Daher stellt es ein so genanntes
residuales Granitlager dar, bei dem Granit chemisch am Ort durch
hydrothermale Flüssigkeiten in Kaolin umgewandelt wurde (im
Gegensatz zu hydrothermalen Vorkommen, bei denen Flüssigkeiten das
umgewandelte Gestein an einen anderen Ort transportiert haben.
Gemäß wikipedia (
-> link) sind die größten Kaolin-erzeugenden
Länder China, die U.S.A. (mit dem Bundesstaat Georgia als
Haupterzeuger, vgl.
-> link), Japan,
England, Deutschland, und an 6. Stelle bereits Österreich, trotz
seiner bescheidenen geografischen Größe. Neben Tragwein/Kriechbaum
wird Kaolin in Österreich nur noch in Aspang/Zöbern (südöstlich von
Wien) abgebaut. In Tragwein/Kriechbaum wird Kaolin sowohl im Tagbau
als auch im Untertagbau abgebaut, was durch eine einzigartige
geologische Situation ermöglicht wird.
Um den Cache zu loggen, genießt bitte zuerst die Aussicht und
die weißen Kaolinhügel - manchmal ergeben sich im See vor euch
schöne Spiegelbilder, UND sendet uns per E-Mail, wozu das hölzerne
Gebäude im Rahmen des Kaolinabbaus diente, das ihr von euer
aktuellen Position einige hundert Meter im Süd-süd-osten erblickt.
Die geografische Position des Gebäudes ist N 48° 18.110' E 014°
37,891'. Wenn ihr wollt, könnt ihr dorthin wandern oder fahren;
bleibt aber bitte unbedingt auf der Straßen UND BETRETET NICHT das
Gebäude (das bereits baufällig ist) und auch nicht das
Kaolinabbaugebiet - beides ist Privatgrund der Firma KAMIG.

dem man Kaolinhügel (oder den See) im Hintergrund erkennen
kann.

Kaolin-See
English
Kaolin, also called porcelain clay, is mined in Austria in only
two places. This location here in Kriechbaum/Tragwein is the
largest and also seat of the headquarter of the main Asstrian
Kaolin mining company, KAMIG. The location given for the earthcache
is a public parking area along an Austrian public road, wherefrom
the Kaolin mining location and mountains of Kaolin (and remnants
from the mining, including a nice lake) can be overlooked
surrounded by a beautiful hilly landscape.
Kaolin is a soft, iron-free white clay-like rock that is mainly
used for producing porcelain and in the paper industry. In its
modern meaning, it is a rather loosely used geologic term to refer
to white clayey rock that is predominantly composed of Kaolin Group
(khandite) minerals. The most common constituent is the mineral
kaolinite (
-> link).
The word "Kaolin" is derived from the Chinese town Gaoling,
meaning "hilly ridge". Locations containing Kaolin are rather rare
on our world. Kriechbaum/Tragwein is located upon (and surrounded
by hills of) granite rock. Thus it constitutes a residual Kaolin
location, where granite has been chemically transformed in situ by
hydrothermal fluids into Kaolin (in contrast to hydrothermal
locations, where fluids have transported the transformed rock to a
different location).
According to wikipedia (
-> link), the main Kaolin-producing countries are
China, U.S.A. (Georgia being the leading producing state, see
-> link), Japan,
England, Germany, followed by Austria (constituing numer 6
worldwide, despite being a rather tiny country). Besides
Tragwein/Kriechbaum, the only other place where Kaolin can be found
in Austria is Aspang/Zöbern (south of Vienna). In
Tragwein/Kriechbaum, Kaolin is both surface-mined and deep-mined,
due to a unique geological situation.
In order to log this cache, please admire the scenery and the
whiteness of the Kaolin hills - sometimes mirrored in the lake just
in front of you, AND e-mail us what the wooden building was used
for in the process of Kaolin mining that can be seen from your
current location to the south-south-east in a few hundred meters
(ca. 1000 ft) distance. The location of the building is N 48°
18.110' E 014° 37,891'. If you want you can go or drive there along
the road, but please stay on the public road and DO NOT ENTER the
building (being more of a ruin nowadays) nor the Kaolin mining
grounds - they are private property of the KAMIG company.
