A Stick in the mud
Instructions
This is a very easy cache that involves a short walk in the woods. Just simply head out to the posted coordinates (N45 21.056 W75 36.223) where you will find a black tag on a tree. The tag is at eye level and has a 3-digit number that represents the distance (in meters) from the tag to the cache. Simply head out to the cache.
Oh wait !! You will need the bearing on which to travel. Just solve the simple puzzle below. The answer to the puzzle represents the bearing (True North) that the cache lays from the tag.
The puzzle
A Geocacher is standing on the shore of the Ottawa River looking out to the River. He observes a stick poking out of the water. A local man approaches him. The ever-curious Geocacher asks him the total length of the stick. The local man can’t remember the length of the stick but tells the Geocacher that one-half of the stick is in the mud at the bottom; another one-third of it is covered by water. The Geocacher paddles out and measures the length of the stick poking out of the water at 2.833 ft in length. He promptly paddles back to shore and informs the local man the total length of the stick.
What is the total length of the stick (in feet)?
The cache
Armed with your true north bearing (the total length of the stick), you can head out and grab the cache. It is jammed in the crotch of a three-trunk maple tree about 2 meters off of the ground. It is a 7”X 3” camouflaged container that contains an assortment of swag and a little something from Tim Hortons for the FTF.
(Note: as of the 24th of October 2007 the cache is attached to the same tree trunk with a hanger and is not jammed in the crotch. This was done to prevent it from falling on the ground.)
Enjoy !!!!
