The Road That Mollie Took
There is a history lesson that goes along with this site. Thanks to a local senior citizen, we are able to relate this story to you. The NB Central Railway was started in 1886, and completed in 1888. It was 80 miles in length, and ran from Norton to Chipman, NB. In its construction, 800 men were employed,as well as many horses. Total cost of the line was $496,000.00. Imagine what it would cost today! There were 5 stations , an engine house and 4 water tanks along the route. They had 2 locomotives, 20 flat cars, and 12 ballast cars. In later years, the train consisted of an engine, a tender, a couple of freight cars, and a passenger/baggage car.
There were three major wrecks on the line, all occurring at railway trestles. This train carried mail to several places along the way, as well as freight, forest products, livestock feed, passengers and baggage. This line was abandoned in 1961, and the rails taken up in 1967. Two locomotives in my memory were #29, and # 144. The #29 was taken to the Hillsborough/Salem Railway, and while there, was severely damaged by fire. We have since heard that it resides at the CPR Headquarters in Calgary. We are not able to confirm this fact at this time. The last engineer was John Myers ; firemen , Wiley McGinley. This train was affectionately called :MOLLIE!!
