A small traditional cache that is WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBLE
This is a small cache located in an UNRESTRICTED AREA* of the Grand Rapids/Itasca County Airport. Please remember to replace the cache EXACTLY AS FOUND so that others can enjoy finding it too.
Itasca County residents are lucky to have a wonderful and very active airport facility. The field boasts that over 80 aircraft are based here and I believe it! In addition to a very active group of civil aviators, the airport has lots of hangars owned by private pilots. There is also a Fixed Base Operation (FBO) with a staff of Flight Instructors and Rental Aircraft. The Civil Air Patrol Squadron and the Experimental Aircraft Association are active here as well
The main 5,755 foot paved runway has a paved parallel taxiway. There are also two sod runways; one is 2,968 feet and the other 1,450 feet long. At the north end of the airport, Lily Lake provides a landing area for seaplanes.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation maintains updated facility information at their website. When the terminal facility is open, there are some great historical photographs inside. They show some of the early days at the field and many of the photographs include images of Gordon Newstrom to whom the field is dedicated.
