Undercliffe Cemetery Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

idlejax: Very sorry to report that as suspected the cache has disappeared.
I searched the surrounding area for any sign of the TB's 'More Tea Vicar' and 'MSTzilla'a Merciless Fates Coin' but found nothing.
As this is such an interesting location I will probably place another cache in another part of the cemetery.
Thanks to all those who have visited.

Undercliffe Cemetery is an atmospheric, gothic burial ground with breathtaking panoramic views of Bradford.
Built in 1854, the 25-acre site high above the city contains many grand 19th century monuments, extravagant mausoleums and finely decorated obelisks.
Listed by English Heritage Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest, Undercliffe Cemetery has been described as "one of the most striking achievements of Victorian funeral design".
The cemetery was laid out so that, in death, as in life, social status could be observed. The wealthy reserved many plots for their memorials such as the Illingworth mausoleum, covering eighteen plots. Many of Bradford's prominent families have some kind of representation in the cemetery, including wool barons, Lord Mayors, surgeons and clergymen. However, there were burial plots for the poor, opened up in less favourable parts of the cemetery with as many as forty bodies placed in them at a time. In 1976, the Bradford Cemetery Company went into liquidation and the cemetery was neglected. However, a campaign by local people resulted in Bradford Council purchasing the cemetery from its private owner and declaring it a conservation area. The cemetery is now in the care of Undercliffe Cemetery Charity and is still used today for burials.

The cache is away from the gravestones, and has been placed with the kind permission of Neil McLellan (the Cemetery Coordinator), who is keen to encourage respectful visitors.

Undercliffe Cemetery is also the final resting place of Mark "The Cat" Thompson who was a prominent member of the caching community in its early years. Mark sadly passed away on September 12th 2004 aged 48 years. (visit link)

*** If you use the Otley Road car park please note that the steps that go up through the trees can be very slippery when wet - you would be better to walk up the main path and along the promenade. ***

*** Allow plenty of time for a good look around. ***
