Geocache Description:

This cache begins in the heart of Wangaratta at arguably the most beautiful building in the city. The final location takes you to a lookout at the Warby Ranges, about ten kilometres away. The terrain is rough in places and you will need good walking shoes.

Wangaratta's Holy Trinity Cathedral is an imposing and majestic structure. Its huge timber bell tower dominates the skyline and the Cathedral and the surrounding memorial gardens are a popular site for visitors to the city.

The Cathedral was built in stages beginning in 1908, and has since undergone additions in 1922-1924 and 1961-1965. The location of the Cathedral in its own precinct, known as The Close, is quite rare and believed to be the only known example in Australia. The surrounding buildings in the precinct date back to the mid 19th Century and many maintain aspects of their original architecture. The entire area is on the Victorian Heritage Registry for its significant historical value both to Wangaratta, the Anglican Church, the architecture of the Cathedral and the role the precinct has played in education in rural areas.

Much more could be written of the Cathedral and its contents, but the focus of this cache is on its construction. Additions to the church were built from stone taken from a local quarry in the Warby Ranges. I encountered the quarry by chance recently and was fascinated to read of its link to this grand old building. From the nearest car park, a 1.5 kilometre return walking track will take you to the site of the quarry where original machinery still stands.

You will also encounter the original storage areas for the explosives used, and evidence of drilling can be found on many of the surrounding rocks.

To find the cache you must first visit the Cathedral. In the memorial gardens on the south side you will find a plaque dedicated to Joyce Gooday. Note the month (m) and day (dd) of her birth. Nearby is a wooden seat with a plaque placed in the memory of Verlene Fiddes. Note the day (xx) of Verlene's passing.
