Cache is located off Rt. 24 North, on State of RI land. The cache
site is a leisurely walk from parking area. Access to Knoll is by a
narrow path from parking area, or along beach when tide is not
high. Path entrance does have some poison ivy. Surroundings
indicate a fair bit of nighttime & ATV activity. However, the
area offers some nice views of a few isolated RI coves.
Cache is a 5X7 clear plastic sealable container, initially
containing: logbook & pencil, 2005 West Virginia Quarter, key
ring, foam bug stamp, plastic dinosaur, sea star & magnetic
schedule for Boston College '58 Golden Anniversary Reunion. The
entrance to the parking area is located north of Exit 2 and is
marked by the 'GULL COVE FISHING AREA' DEM sign. The entrance is
used by RI DPW trucks to dump extra highway material, boaters &
fishermen to access the boat ramp area and party goers to access
the isolated knoll area. The area offers some nice views of The
Cove, a large expanse of shallow saltwater that stretches from the
Sakonnet River in the East to the ruins of Anne Hutchinson's old
homestead in the West. The area has plenty of parking, which might
indicate a busy spot for summer swimming & fishing. However,
the small, unmarked entrance off the busy highway would make one
think that most usage is by a very limited number of local
fishermen & party goers. However, we did see a few muggles
walking along the shoreline. With all the party debris in the knoll
area, it is highly recommended to limit any search time to the
daylight hours.
