Geocache Description:

This is a medium sized Lock & Lock container at the junction of Hwy 21 and Range Road 221 between Camrose and Edmonton.

We were on our way home at the end of a 9-day camping/caching vacation and were about 50 miles from home when we heard a rumbling we thought was a flat tire on our tent trailer. When we stopped we discovered it was not a flat but a hub. The lug bolts had all worn loose within the hub. Since they were no longer firmly held in the hub but were able to wobble around they had eventually worn away the holes in the wheel to where, by the time we had stopped, the holes in the wheel were larger than the lug nuts. The only thing holding the wheel on was the fact that we had been going straight down the road.

So we stood there pondering what we should do. We came up with a plan. If we were to put on the spare and drive slowly perhaps the hub would stay together long enough for us to get home. Good plan, or so we thought. We bolted on the spare and started off again. After a little while we heard this same rumbling sound again. We stopped at the junction of Hwy 21 and Range Road 221 and saw that the spare wheel had also worn away just like the first had. We had made it only 10 more miles. So we turned the corner to park our trailer off the highway and as we did so, the wheel fell right off.

So we stood there pondering what to do next? Well, we had to leave our trailer there; it was as simple as that. But then what. Next day we rented a flatbed trailer and hauled it out to where we had left our tent trailer. But guess what? It wouldn’t fit between the fender wells of the flatbed. We tried every which way, but our tent trailer was just not going to fit. So we left it there again and realized we would have to get it towed.

But in the spirit of making lemonade out of lemons, we decided to plant a cache to commemorate our experience. So while grandpaloren was working on the trailer I was scoping out a place to hide this cache. Hopefully, when you find it, our trailer will not still be there.

Update as of October 16, 2007
We went back out and grandpaloren cut the loose studs off from the hub with a hacksaw and managed to bolt a spare tire onto the hub with some bolts. That allowed us to get our trailer back home again where he can replace the ruined hub.
