In 1979 UNESCO placed Les Combarelles and Le Font de Gaume on the World Heritage List. If you want to visit the caves to see the prehistoric engravings (Les Combarelles ) or polychrome paintings (Le Font de Gaume) you need to make a booking, usually several days in advance, at the ticket office.
However, you do not have to pay to reach this cache which is outside and to the rear of the booking office, where there is room for one or two cars to pull up. However, you could use the proper car park and have a good nose around.
