A chance to enjoy a seat in the sun
Putney Heath is very much the forgotten cousin of Wimbeldon Common and has few claims to fame. The ancient parish of Putney once covered the large area between the Thames to the north and Tibbet's Corner on Putney Heath to the south. For many years, Putney was a "peculiar" of the See of Canterbury, the Archbishop being also Lord of the Manor. In the 1845 reorganisations, it lost its peculiar status and much of the lands of the parish.
Putney Heath has been the scene of rapes, murders and duels. Its dense woodland deadens sound and bares down heavily on those that wander its paths. In 1652 the third Lord Chandos and Colonel Henry Compton met in a duel which Compton did not survive! Just over a century later in 1798 the Prime Minister William Pitt duelled with a George Tierney MP but no blood was successfully spilt, and eleven years later another Minister of the Crown George Canning fought out an affair of honour with Lord Castlereagh: both survived!
You have been warned!
Now to the cache: you seek a Davenport ABCD-EFGH, and thence to N51 26.7BD W000 14.0FG - where you will find a matt black painted Sainsbury's litre soup pot
