Geocache Description:

"Hillforts are the best known and the most beautiful archaeological monuments in Lithuania. Their total number approaches one thousand..."

"The hillfort as a defensive facility, contains two basic elements, i.e. the fortified locus itself and its fortifications. The fortified locus is the levelled summit of the hilltop. It was arranged on the summit of a mound. The levelled summit was enclosed by earth fortifications, which include ramparts, ditches, terraces and slopes, as well as wood fortifications, which include various fences, barriers, towers and walls. Only earth fortifications have survived until today. They usually consisted of several lines. Apart from the main rampart and ditch there used to be one or a few lines of additional smaller ramparts and shallow ditches..."

by Gintautas Zabiela, an archaelogist.

The hillfort is assigned a unique number A1193 in Lithuanian Heritage Registry. Should you notice any abnormal activity or violence against the cultural monument, feel free to report it here

Radio amateurs may find it an interesting spot to operate their short wave radios from VI118 that refers to Ukmerge Hillfort for a LHFA HAM Radio Award

Both of the above links seem to be in Lithuanian only, I'll check later if they have an English version too.

Ukmerge Hillfort is really attractive hill esthetically. I visited it on my bicycle trip Zasliai to Panevezys. Ironically had to fix a punctured front tire right on the slope of this hillfort, hid the cache in between fixing the flat.

Below is a link to a quick movie I captured with my photo camera while riding:

Ukmerge Hillfort dates back to the 14th Century, there was a wooden Vilkmerge castle up on top that was burned out in 1388 by defenders, rebuilt later and conquered by the Oder in August 1391.

Located near the confluence of Ukmergele and Sventoji Rivers right in Ukmerge downtown the Hillfort is definitely worth a visit. Enjoy another piece of history.

The coords provided are only approximate. As with all my hides I try to do as much sampling as possible, but seldom get a professional precision. Don't expect to find the cache exactly at the numbers your GPSr reads. Other than plainly logging "off coords" please add your version of correct coords, this will make your entry useful both for cache owner and other seekers. Appreciate your cooperation.
