The Lost Trail of Locust Shade Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Three Boys a Caching: This is indeed gone, and the trail is no longer lost.
While there is a great geocache hidey spot near here in which I could replace it, I think it is time to open this up to someone else.
Good luck and happy geocaching!

Geocache Description:

Located in Locust Shade Park between Routes 1 and 95, and the front and rear gates of Quantico Marine Corps Base.

After entering Locust Shade, park by the Marina (the anchor signs). At the Marina, follow the counterclockwise trail around the pond. If you feel you must bushwack, and don't mind getting your feet wet, you can turn left and follow the clockwise trail (which may also become a lost trail unless it gets more traffic).

When you get to the other side of the pond, you'll find part of what once was a three mile trail system. Much of that trail system was "lost" when 135 acres of Locust Shade Park north of the power lines was reallocated for the National Museum of the Marine Corps.

Locust Shade Park was originally federal government land. It was donated to Prince William County through the Federal Lands to Parks Program, which assists US communities to obtain surplus federal land, usually at no cost, for public park and recreation purposes.

This is a wonderful little-known park with four hundred acres of outdoor fun, including batting cages, mini-golf, driving range, playgrounds, tennis courts, hiking trails, picnic pavilions, a sand volleyball court, and a 500 seat amphitheater. The eight acre pond you walk around is an "Urban Fishing Program" site, stocked regularly with trout and catfish. You can tour the pond on pedal boats from May through September.

Less than a year ago, there was only one geocache in the park. Now, there are at least eight, including this one, to enjoy. This cache is about 20 feet off an established trail, so can be reached with very little bushwacking. This is a typical medium sized ammo can in the woods hide. Please cover it well after you've logged your find.

My regrets to the pajama cachers, Locust Shade Park closes at dusk.

FTF congrats don't get lost on CliffMcC31!
