Geocache Description:

Geocaching Colorado
Cerro Summit recreation area, May be tough in winter with lots of muggles, no need to cross fence.

In 1853 Captain John D Gunnison was comissioned to find a transcontinental railroad rout. From what is now Gunnison, Co. to the Utah line he followed present day hwy 50. He was standing very near this spot when he is reported to have declaired "This rugged country is totally unsuitable for a railroad!" He and most of his party were killed later that year by a renegade band of Pavaht Utes in presant day Utah. The D&RG started building a narrow guage line 30 years later along the Gunnison river to Cimmeron and over Cerro Summit near where the cache is placed.
