Geocache Description:

A jewel in Rotorua’s Crown, Lake Okareka glistens in the sun. An easy 35 minute walk each way on a flat path and a boardwalk along the Southern side of this lake will take you two and a half kilometres into Dragon Country! However, there is plenty to see and do enroute, so allow more time to enjoy yourself.

A natural embankment with ample cover will hide your approach over the last half kilometre and you will pass fields of green pasture containing dragon fodder. To enter into these pastures would be a shocking experience and incur the wrath of the local flock holders, constabulary and the Dragon itself!

Dogs and bikes are absolutely forbidden! Not only will the Dragon eat them (and ye olde attached cacher) for breakfast but the 300 coins of Lydia penance required will leave said cacher bereft of funds for the necessities of life!

The lake has no natural outlet, however the Dragon has fashioned a moat like rampart that ensures that fresh water is available without it having to leave its lair. A side benefit of this is that the lake no longer floods in the monsoon season, pleasing the local residents and of course the Dragon. It is your task to cross this rampart, retrieve the cache and escape without attracting the attention of either the Dragon or any wandering Muggles.

Yes – many Muggles test their courage, fortitude and physical stamina by running the track to the lair and back again. Others have been known to kayak or boat across and tease the Dragon by feasting on sumptuous repasts in close vicinity. They know, as you now know, that the Dragon will not leave its eggs unattended. Unfortunately for you, the cache is hidden in the Dragon’s nesting cave. I guess you will have to pick a time when the Dragon is not there…

A Dragon's View

The benevolence of the Dragon to its surrounding neighbours is reflected in the abundance of protected flora and fauna. The sanctuary includes a shelter from the Dragon, cunningly disguised as a Bird Watching Hide, along with numerous informational and identification signs as well as strategically placed seats. For the nervous in disposition, self composting toilets are provided at the 2km mark, along with a picnic area and large shelter. Wheelchairs are acceptable modes of transportation to here but a lackey should be dispatched from this point to the Dragon’s Lair! For the brave, a stroller may make it to the Lair – just don’t forget to take the Tyke with you as you run from the wrath of the Dragon, cache (hopefully) in hand!

The original cache itself was last seen in a clear 2 litre systema with ye olde cache sticker on top. It contained:

  • FTF Prize – Map Compass (This is the 3rd cache that this Compass has been a FTF prize at – take the challenge – put out a new cache and use it a FTF prize again – don’t break the chain! No 1 was Tribute to "Geocache GC45". No 2 was Wild Pork, Venison and Roast Patutu. The next cache in the chain is Frayed Kiwis.)
  • Notebook, pen, sharpener
  • Animal Shapes (Dragon Food? Foam though but useful as bait!), Rugby Ball, Sylvester, Tiki Keyring, Printing Press, Police Car, AT&T Badge, USB to mini USB cable
  • A Dragon Spinner Geocoin is also included, for the finder to move on. This is the second stop in its travels - and the second 'new' cache it has been in.

Update 08 Nov 08 - New cache in place. This is a camouflaged 2litre sistema container. It contains the usual log, pen, pencil etc as well as some new goodies: pirate, frisbee, kiwi bottleopener keychain, stop-watch, phone holder. And a TB (WOL2).

General Hint: Read the Cache Name & Description, look at the photo and prior logs. Should be easily found without GPS.
