In 1870 Albion Mines was renamed Stellarton, after its Stellar Coal. Coal mining flourished in Stellarton from 1870 - 1920. By 1910 the Acadian Co. employed 1350 miners. Mining gradually declined, except during WWII, finishing in 1957 for economic and safety reasons. 650 men perished in these dangerous pits, including 88 in the 1918 Allan Explosion.
