Following the disruption of 1843 the greater part of the
Church of Scotland split away for a period of nearly 60 years to
form the Free Church of Scotland. The dispute was over the right of
the local landowner to appoint the parish minister, a right which
rejected by the majority at the General assembly in 1834, but was
then upheld by the Court of Session. On Arran the majority of
joined the new denomination and therefore found themselves without
a place to worship. By 1850 there were seven Free Church buildings
on the island and two preaching stations, but for a few months this
cave on the Kilpatrick shore was the meeting place for the Shiskine
valley congregation.
The first stage of the cache will take you to the Preaching
Cave where you will find your instructions for the final cache
location. As preaching, to quote the C19 Episcopalian
theologian Phillip Brooks, is the communication of truth by man
to men, the swaps in this cache contain a variety of preaching
material on subjects as various as the environment, healthy living
and moral philosophy. You are encouraged to leave your own
preaching material on whatever subject matter you feel drawn
to communicate the truth of by cacher to cacher.
